School Custodian – High School Campus
Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for supporting the daily cleaning, maintenance, organization, and general upkeep of the high school campus. This position works closely with the Facilities team and school leadership to maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, and functional environment for students, staff, families, and visitors.
The ideal candidate is dependable, attentive to detail, comfortable working in an active school environment, and willing to assist with a variety of custodial and facilities-related tasks throughout the school day.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, stairwells, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
- Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms throughout the day.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, wipe surfaces, and remove trash and recycling as needed.
- Monitor high-traffic areas and respond promptly to spills, litter, or other cleaning needs.
- Maintain entrances, sidewalks, and other areas immediately surrounding the school building.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of furniture, tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies for school events, meetings, assemblies, and other activities.
- Move boxes, deliveries, furniture, supplies, and equipment as needed.
- Receive or assist with school deliveries and help distribute materials to appropriate areas.
- Maintain custodial closets, cleaning supplies, and equipment in a clean and organized manner.
- Notify the Facilities Manager or supervisor of maintenance concerns, damaged equipment, leaks, safety hazards, or needed repairs.
- Assist with minor facilities tasks and basic building upkeep as directed.
- Support snow, ice, and inclement-weather cleanup when necessary.
- Help prepare classrooms and common areas for the beginning and end of the school year and for special programs or events.
- Follow appropriate procedures for the safe use, storage, and handling of cleaning products and equipment.
- Follow all school safety, security, fire safety, and emergency procedures.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries and professional conduct when working around students.
- Respond to custodial or facilities needs that arise during the school day in a timely and professional manner.
- Perform other custodial and facilities-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous custodial, maintenance, facilities, or building-services experience preferred.
- Experience working in a school, nonprofit, commercial, or similar facility is a plus.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Strong reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate professionally with staff, students, families, vendors, and visitors.
- Willingness to perform a variety of tasks and respond to changing needs throughout the school day.
- Basic knowledge of cleaning products, equipment, and safe cleaning practices preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate judgment while working in a school environment.
Physical Requirements
The position requires regular physical activity, including standing and walking for extended periods; bending, reaching, stooping, pushing, and pulling; climbing stairs; and lifting and carrying supplies, furniture, boxes, and equipment. The employee must be able to safely perform the physical responsibilities associated with custodial and facilities work, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Schedule
This position requires an on-site presence at the high school campus. The regular work schedule will be established by the school based on operational needs. Occasional early morning, evening, weekend, or special-event work may be required.
